SAN JOSE, CA -- Negotiations have just been finalized between San Jose's Tam Communications and Discovery Communications, Inc., giving Tam go-ahead to produce a one-hour special to air on the Discovery Channel in the fall. The program, currently titled Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer, will focus on the USCG Aviation Survivalmen (ASM), an elite branch of the United States Coast Guard. Rescue Swimmers are part of the Coast Guard's aviation team and are primarily responsible for aiding victims of at-sea emergencies.
Production of the one-hour documentary, co-created by Tam Fraser and Susan O'Connor Fraser, is already underway. Fraser, who is also the show's director, notes that principal photography will include trips to the East Coast as well as the North Pacific. "Our shooting script calls for a combination of historical material, on-scene action footage and intimate interview footage with Rescue Swimmers, revealing why they've chosen this highly unusual profession."
The documentary and the Discovery deal is indicative of the slate of non-fiction programming being offered by Tam's Entertainment Group. Connie Segreto, Rescue Swimmer producer and Vice President of the Entertainment Group commented that "Our Coast Guard series was our first national effort in this regard, following our Paramedics 10-97! program which debuted in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1993. Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer is allowing us to take our focus in the non-fiction arena to a new level. We're very excited about this new association with Discovery."
