KLA-Tencor's VisEdge Product Comes Alive in 3D

SCOTTS VALLEY, CA--In one of their latest releases, Tam Communications helped San Jose-based ATE company KLA-Tencor tell the world about their VisEdge technology--a technology that is becoming increasingly critical to the semiconductor manufacturing process. The challenge was that the technology, which helps manufacturers see defects on the edge of a semiconductor wafer, works on the submicron level (invisible to the human eye) so visualizing it could only be done in 3D. Tam Communications Executive Producer/Creative Director, Susan O'Connor Fraser, worked with the KLA-Tencor marketing team to develop the script and outline the 3D animations. She then tapped Aaron Dingman to come up with the many elements that would eventually form the core of the 5-minute video.

Dingman's 3D sequences, which showed in vivid detail how these edge defects are formed, were then combined with additional graphics and effects sequences created by Tam's Digital Media Associate, David Trounstine. Everything was then imported into Tam's Avid Adrenaline digital editing system where Editor Tam O'Connor Fraser went to work. Tam's effort included compositing 2D text effects created with the Boris F/X package, over the animated sequences.

With post-production well underway, O'Connor Fraser then worked with International Contact to translate the voice and graphics into Japanese so that simultaneous product launches in U. S. and Japan could be supported. Digital versions of the animations were also made available for desktop presentations and streaming versions of the finished videos were uploaded to English and Japanese microsites.

The Japanese version of the final program was also combined with other KLA-Tencor videos and looped for KLA-Tencor's trade show booth at Semicon Japan. Trounstine handled the DVD authoring.
